LCHS nurse wins Respect Carers Award

Posted on: 11th December 2019

A male nurse from LCHS has been honoured with a regional award for his contribution to the end of life care for Darren Williams.

Darren known as Taff, sadly passed away a couple of months ago and his family nominated David Edwards, a district nurse who looked after him for a Respect Carers Award.

The award is sponsored by Respect Green Burial Parks and Respect Direct Funeral Services in Gainsborough and Kirton Lindsey and was given in Taff’s memory.

The organisation hears families’ heartfelt comments about how good a hospital, care home, nursing home, hospice or home visiting carers were and encourage nominations for their Respect Carers Awards.

The awards give thanks and recognition to all carers in communities throughout Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

David was cited as being a very experienced district nurse who exuded a reassuring calmness. The family felt he always went above and beyond his duties by always getting back to them quickly.

Taff’s family felt very lucky to have David not only for his wealth of experience but because he is a very lovely man.

David who works as part of Gainsborough Community Nursing Team, said: “I am humbled and proud to receive this award; it was truly unexpected.

“I feel very honoured that the family nominated me.”

A small presentation took place at David’s workplace, John Coupland Hospital in Gainsborough on Tuesday, 10 December.

Gordon Tulley, who presented the award on behalf of Respect Green Burial Parks and Respect Direct Funeral Services said: “It was a pleasure to meet David and bestow this award in Taff’s memory.

“We have been running these awards for nine years and David is only the second male nurse to receive this accolade.”

Debbie Leigh, David’s line manager said: “We are extremely proud of David at LCHS. He consistently works hard and delivers compassionate nursing to all his patients. He truly deserves this award.”
